REAP

ROOKE’s Emerging Artist Program (REAP) is a mentorship program that springboards young artists into their career, bridging the gap between training and working professionally. This program supports aspiring young artists and emerging artists in the first few years of their career to expand their professional networks, see how ROOKE creates and tours work and develop a myriad of skills from performance through sustainable practice and producing to name a few. REAP is incredibly valuable to the artists it supports. They gain valuable experience and skills through one-to-one mentoring, personalised coaching, online sessions on creative practice and producing as well as shadowing ROOKE on tours.

  • Ivy Marshall

I’ve been a part of a youth circus group here in Tasmania for the last 6 six years and I also grew up with my older siblings being in circus so I’ve been around circus most of my life. My main specialty is static trapeze and I’ve also done a bit of double and swinging trapeze.

Last year REAP presented me with some really fun opportunities, I got to learn from the amazing ROOKE team, watch performances and and was able to perform in Up Late myself.

I’m super excited for what this year will bring and I’m so happy to be a part of REAP again and to be involved in upcoming opportunities.

  • Grady Lynch

Grady Lynch is a Launceston local who has been performing since early high school. From musicals to Shakespeare and now predominantly as a professional wrestler, he enjoys any opportunity to embrace performance and the challenges they present. Grady is also undertaking a Bachelor of Performing Arts degree at Utas.

Grady reflecting on 2023 - “I thoroughly enjoyed getting the chance to learn about making, touring and performing a show with Rooke and I can't wait to continue to work with and learn as much as I can from such generous, giving and knowledgeable professionals in the performing arts and circus industry.”

  • Georgia Wallace

I’ve been with Warehouse Circus in Canberra for 10 years. I started circus as a fun after school sport, and have never wanted to stop! I have been in the Warehouse Performance Troupe for several years and love the opportunity it provides for me to train, learn new skills and perform. I also work for Warehouse as a trainer and Programs Administrator.

I applied for REAP after meeting ROOKE at the Canberra Circus Festival. Seeing Interloper was the highlight of the festival for many of us there. I also had a fantastic opportunity to work with Lewie on ‘jugglumbling’ - a combination of juggling and tumbling, which I loved! I feel very privileged to work with ROOKE through this program and look forward to seeing what emerges from it.

Over the last year, I’ve cowritten a juggling and tumbling act with Lewie which enabled me to perform in a show at Adelaide Fringe. I was also able to participate in Dekoor and experience the creative development process and performances across the week. I’m looking forward to seeing the development of Nimble throughout this year, and continuing to develop my skills with my ROOKE mentors!

  • Seth Crane

I’m 17 and live on the Northwest Coast of Tassie. I’ve been involved in the local entertainment community for the past 7 years and have enjoyed every minute. I joined Slipstream Circus in 2017, after becoming a huge fan of Cirque Du Soleil at the age of 12.

I trained as an aerial artist at Slipstream for 4 years and performed in several of their productions. I then left Slipstream to pursue an interest in my local theatre community, I gained a strong passion for technical theatre and started Stage Managing, Production Managing, and designing/operating lighting for community theatre shows.

With the support of my local community, I have since been able to start up my own business as a local Theatre Technician and have now been a part of 40+ shows.

I’m excited to travel with the team in 2024 and see how a professional company works and tours, whilst gaining oodles of fun knowledge. I can’t wait to see how their show develops in the season.

REAP Applications Now Closed For 2024

Hello ROOKE friends!

We’re super excited to be renewing our REAP Program in 2024.

What exactly this program will look like in 2024 will depend on what applicants want to get out of the program, but it could include training and learning new skills, creating acts and routines for performance, lighting, arts administration, or producing. The program will include online and in-person elements, as well as the potential to be involved in projects that ROOKE is working on. Applicants must be 16+ and ideally based in Tasmania. However, we invite anyone in Australia to apply.

If this seems like it could be something you’re interested in and you’d like more information, please send Conor an email at reap@rooke.org.au with answers to the following 3 questions. Responses can be written, recorded or videoed.

  1. What is your name, what area do you live in and how old are you?

  2. What is your thing? Or things! What is your area of interest, why do you like it and what do you want to do with it?

  3. What can we do for you? We have experience in tumbling, group acrobatics, hula hoops, hoop diving, handstands, diabolo, physical drama/comedy, production and tech, child wrangling, rapping, Dungeons and Dragons, folding a fitted sheet and much more.

  4. Do you need any additional support? We are able to provide some support for a range of barriers that may otherwise prevent you from taking part in REAP. Let us know what this support would look like for you.

Applications are due January 8th, 2024.

If this isn’t your thing, but you know someone who might be interested, please send it along. Additionally, if you’re interested in supporting our REAP program, head to our Support Us page to learn all about our Creative Australia Plus 1 campaign.
